Natural Thyroid Treatment Tip: Dealing With Unsupportive Friends & Family Members

When following a natural thyroid treatment protocol, it’s almost inevitable that you are going to receive criticism from friends and/or family members.  The reason for this is because they simply won’t understand the approach you are taking, as most people follow the advice given by their medical doctor.  So for example, if you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and if a friend or family member knows (or if you tell them) that the recommended treatment is taking thyroid hormone daily, then there is an excellent chance they will try to talk you out of following a natural thyroid treatment protocol.

The same concept applies with hyperthyroidism and Graves’ Disease, as if this is the condition you have, and a friend or family member realizes that the typical treatment involves taking anti-thyroid drugs or receiving radioactive iodine, then they most likely won’t be supportive of your decision to restore your health through a natural treatment protocol.  Most people don’t think it’s a big deal to take prescription drugs, and while on a temporary basis this may be true, why do this permanently if you don’t have to?

So why is this such a big deal?  After all, does it really matter if there are family members and/or friends who are opposed to your decision to choose natural treatment methods?  Well, it’s tough enough following a natural thyroid treatment protocol when everyone you interact with is supportive of this.  On the other hand, if you have one or more people who are criticizing you for following such a protocol, then this will make it even more challenging to follow through with it.  This is especially true if you have friends and/or family members with thyroid conditions.

Of course the reverse can be true, as for example, if you have hyperthyroidism and decide to follow a natural hyperthyroid treatment protocol, and tell a friend who also has hyperthyroidism about your intentions, then there is a chance they will be interested in following a natural treatment protocol as well.  On the other hand, if they have received great results taking anti-thyroid drugs then they might try to convince you not to follow such a protocol.

How Can You Deal With Nonsupportive Friends & Family Members?

If there are people close to you who have criticized you once or twice and then let it go, then it’s probably not a big deal.  On the other hand, if there are people you associate with who regularly get on your case about your decision to follow a natural thyroid treatment protocol, here are some things you might want to consider doing:

1. Try to educate them about the safety and effectiveness of natural thyroid treatment methods.  This is the first approach I would take, as I would first try to explain to them how safe and effective natural thyroid treatment methods are.  You might need to take this one step further and provide them with some resources, such as this website, and/or some books on natural thyroid health.  Many times they will be stubborn and will not want to listen to what you have to say, or read any information you provide.  But I would still attempt to at least provide them with some resources first.

2. Avoid the issue.  If you are unable to convince them that natural thyroid treatment methods are safe and effective, then it’s probably best to just avoid the issue, if at all possible.  Just go through the natural thyroid treatment protocol, and then perhaps when they see the great results you have received they will be convinced.

3. As a last step, avoid the person (if possible).  If there is no way you can convince the person about the benefits of natural thyroid treatment methods, and if you are unable to avoid the issue due to them constantly bringing it up, then the obvious next step is to avoid the person as much as possible.  If the person is a close friend or family member then this of course can be challenging, if not impossible to accomplish.  However, it’s important to keep in mind that if someone close to you is constantly stressing you out about your decision to choose a natural treatment protocol, then this can very well affect your recovery.  So while you might not be able to completely avoid someone, something will need to be done to have them accept your decision, or at least not have them constantly bother you about it, even if they don’t fully agree with it.

In summary, the people you interact with might not play a huge role in your recovery from a thyroid condition, but they definitely can be a factor.  Having someone who is constantly negative about the choice you have made can affect your recovery, and in some cases will even cause a person to change their mind about following a natural thyroid treatment protocol.  On the other hand, having friends and family members who are supportive of your decision, or at the very least respect the choice you made, will make it much easier to comply and will greatly improve the chances that you will successfully restore your health back to normal.
